Rerun Session of “Introduction to FinTech” MOOCMay 15, 2019Shortlisted as one of the top 10 finalists of the 2019 edX Prize for Exceptional Contributions in Online Teaching and Learning, Introduction to FinTech, which was first launched in May 2018, attracted more than 39,000 learners from over 195 countries across the world to join the journey into Financial Technology (FinTech).

Launch of “FinTech Ethics and Risks” MOOCMay 15, 2019FinTech Ethics and Risks, the second course in the HKU FinTech Certificate Program, has started. There have been more than 5,000 learners from 154 countries and regions joining the course since its initial launch in mid-May. Course instructors, Mr David Bishop and Mr David Lee, will explore with you the risks and ethical considerations in emerging technologies, such as FinTech, and the corresponding measures that we can take to forge a better future of the financial services industry.

HKU x HLC MOOC ConferenceJune 27, 2019HKU’s MOOC-Based Virtual Exchange programme is in its third-year collaboration with HKFYG Lee Shau Kee College (HLC). As it comes to an end in this academic year, a ceremony, entitled “HKU x HLC MOOC Conference”, was held at HKU in June to applaud HLC students who have actively engaged in MOOC learning over the past year.

Launch of “Doing Gender and Why it Matters” MOOCJuly 9, 2019Doing Gender and Why it Matters had its first launch on edX platform in July 2019. This interdisciplinary course aims to encourage reflective thinking about the practices of gender in modern society. Course Instructors, Professor Karen Laidler, Dr Carmen Tong and Dr Puja Kapai, will lead the learners to explore more controversial issues, and learners will be able to enhance their literacy around gender issues throughout the course.

Responsive4U ProjectJuly 30, 2019The UGC course sharing project “Responsive4U: Cross-Institutional Course Sharing Project” will be back in the academic year 2019/2020. Eligible undergraduate students from The University of Hong Kong (HKU), The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) can apply for enrolling in one of the 11 courses offered by the partner institutions.

Launch of “Blockchain and FinTech: Basics, Applications, and Limitations” MOOCAugust 27, 2019Blockchain and FinTech: Basics, Applications, and Limitations, the third course in the HKU FinTech Certificate Program, has started in late August. Chief Instructor Dr Siu Ming Yiu from the Department of Computer Science at HKU, with the support of Blockchain and FinTech leaders and guest speakers in the academia and the finance, technology and legal industries, will lay out the design rationale behind blockchain technology, as well as the special features of major blockchain platforms and applications.

The second edition of “Everyday Computing Game” board game for common core course “CCST9003 Everyday Computing and the Internet” has been back in the first semester of academic year 2019/2020.
In this refined version, CCST9003 students will be able to learn algorithms more effectively, such as “recursion”, “dynamic programming”, “greedy”, “cryptography”, etc., which will be taught in the common core course.

Staff appointment
Miss Irene Huang and Miss Janet Zhang joined TELI as part-time Research Assistant in June.
Mr Ka Shun Hung joined TELI as Senior Research Assistant since August.
Mr Cyrus Chan was promoted to be TELI’s IT Manager in July.
Staff departure
Mr Chawla Bramnoor Singh, our part-time Student Research Assistant, graduated from TELI in March. Miss Yannie Ho, our Executive Officer, graduated from TELI in May 2019. Mr Rankine Ho, our E-learning Evangelist; Mr Dominic Hung, our Senior Research Assistant and Mr Harrison Li, our part-time Instructional Design Assistant graduated from TELI in June 2019. Ms Michaela Chin, our Assistant Marketing Manager; Miss Mandy Chan, our Executive Officer, and Mr Kevin Ng, our Project Assistant, graduated from TELI in July 2019. Ms Yanxiang Guo, our E-learning Technology Assistant, Mr James Ngou, our Student Research Assistant, Miss Irene Huang and Miss Janet Zhang graduated from TELI in August 2019. We wish them success in their future endeavors.
